Fall Weather Prep to Prevent Water Damage

Fall is a scenic time of the year that brings the color changing leaves with cooler temperatures. In Maryland, we have a variety of hardwood trees with large leaves as well as numerous types of pine trees, which shed their needles each year. Because of this, SERVPRO of Edgewater often sees homeowners who forget or neglect their gutters, forgetting to clean them. Do not be one of those homeowners this fall!
Gutters can get clogged with leaves and debris which is why it is crucial for homeowners to have their gutters cleaned every year and prevent any water from getting through the flashing and into homes. The same goes for storm drains and window wells. Storm drains should be cleared to avoid any flooding occurring in the lowest level of the home. Window wells should also be cleared of leaves and debris.
Lastly, clear the area where the water from your downspout empties onto your lawn. You will want the water to run clearly away from the foundation to avoid any water damage. In addition, clearing and trimming the landscaping around your house will prevent moisture from building up in your foundation which could also cause water damage.
