On Saturday July 15th, around lunchtime, witnesses say a waterspout was seen on the Chesapeake Bay moving east towards the Shore. You can see video here. This experience caught many boaters by surprise and brought to light how quickly the weather can change while out on the water. Waterspouts can be difficult to predict like much of the Edgewater area weather. Here are several suggestions to follow when heading out on the water.
- Check the National Weather Service before you leave
- Install a weather alert app on your phone
- Let someone know what waterway you will be on
- Make sure flares are not expired
Once you are out on the water and encounter bad weather, you should immediately return to land. The closest land may not be your original destination but it is important to return to shore. During the trip to shore you should put on personal flotation devices as a precaution. Returning safely is the most important part of the boating trip.
